Young Adult Learns that Mac Salad is NOT a Salad

I know it sounds crazy, but there are still people in this world who have no idea what a salad is.

I learned this lesson in the summer of 2016, when I pulled over at a roadside diner somewhere in a rural area for an emergency meal. In other words, I was hungry and the only choice I had was this mystery diner or Taco Bell.

Knowing I had a long drive ahead of me, I didn’t want to eat anything that would deplete my energy and possibly upset my stomach so I opted for the healthier option at the diner.

As soon as I stepped into the venue, I knew I wasn’t going to get my nutritional fill. After all, it was a roadside diner so I didn’t have high expectations.

When I’m forced to eat at place like this, I tend to lean for the healthiest option. In this case, it was some sort of chicken dish accompanied by a salad.

After taking my order, the waiter, a young man in his 20’s came back promptly with a plate of fried chicken and a side of what looked like a macaroni salad.

“Oh I thought this came with a salad?” I asked my waiter.

“Yes ma’am, this is it,” he responded, pointing at the uninspiring slop that was the macaroni salad.

I tried to explain to him that a macaroni was not a salad, in spite of the name, but he kind of just shrugged and went about his business.

For those of you who don’t know, a macaroni salad is a type of pasta salad, served cold made with cooked elbow macaroni and usually prepared with mayonnaise.  It is a salad much in the same way tuna salad, chicken salad, potato salad, etc are.  With huge amounts of mayonnaise and very little, if any veggies to be seen, it cannot be considered healthy.

At first, I was shocked that anyone could confuse macaroni salad for a bowl of fresh, colorful and vibrant vegetables that taste like they have just been picked from a garden and not poured out of a cardboard box.

I then realized that it wasn’t my waiter’s fault. He simply had never been taught how to eat right nor how to cook a healthy and nutritious meal.

The Most Underrated Skill on Earth

You see friend, our education system has deceived us.

Everyday, our children go to school to learn technical skills like how to read and write, how to solve math problems and how to perform open heart surgery.

However, unless you go to culinary school or study to be a dietitian or nutritionist, you never formally learn these fundamental skills that have a direct effect on your health like:

What does it mean to be healthy?

What kind of foods should I be putting into my body to maximize my long term health?

What kind of food should I eat to be energized?

How do I make a healthy salad?

What goes in a healthy meal?

How do I cook healthy meals?

And so much more…….

Our education system is great for helping us get jobs, but it completely fails to teach us the fundamental skills we need to live a long, healthy and vibrant life. It’s actually very simple. There are only 2 skills you need to learn:

  • Nutrition
  • Cooking

Unfortunately, many Americans simply fail to understand the importance of nutrition and cooking until it is too late.

To this day, heart disease remains the number one cause of death in America. Think about crazy that is!

Every year, hundreds of thousands of innocent people lose their lives because they were not taught what good nutrition is nor how to cook healthy meals.

Look. I’m not saying jobs aren’t important. We all need to provide for our family.

However, if we want to see less unnecessary deaths, we need more Americans to understand the difference between what makes a healthy meal and what makes an unhealthy meal.

In other words, we need more people like our friendly waiter to understand that macaroni salad is not a salad and it’s not good for you!

It’s not as complex as it seems…..

Look. I know it can be daunting to learn how to eat healthy.

  1. Even when the menu includes a salad section, the only vegetables are usually plastic tomatoes. croutons, grated cheese and maybe two black olives. It’s really difficult to get anything that has actual vegetables on it
